The Dark Times
The Dark Times is a riso-printed newspaper featuring dark academia news sourced from the internet. Dark academia is an aesthetic rooted in classic literature, a deep passion for knowledge, and a love for learning. However, with the rise of social media, the darker side of the subculture and academia itself often goes unnoticed in the pursuit of these aesthetics. In response, I designed a newspaper with a dual narrative; the front showcases positive news and trends, while the back reveals the negative aspects, highlighting the complexities behind the surface.

Front

The front page highlights the positive aspects of the subculture, showcasing trends, must-visit locations, recipes, and recommendations for enthusiasts. Its design features vibrant illustrations, dynamic layouts, and playful typography, reflecting the subculture’s energy and creativity. Handcrafted zine-inspired elements add a tactile, personal touch, capturing the joy of discovery and engagement.

Back

In contrast, the back delves into critical aspects of the subculture, addressing challenges in academia, the risks of over-identifying with subcultures, and performative pressures. Inspired by traditional newspaper design, it features a structured, serious layout with subtle touches of playful typography for visual cohesion. Interactive elements like crosswords add engagement, blending journalistic depth with everyday accessibility.
Process

The process began with hands-on experimentation, using real materials to explore shapes, textures, and layouts. Early stages involved crafting compositions with cutouts, tearing old book pages and notes, layering paper, and experimenting with physical arrangements to develop visual narratives. These tactile explorations laid the foundation for the final design.
